The author wrote an awesome book! Her writing style and wording and advancing storyline was completely captivating! I could not put it down even though I was too tired to focus on the words.So why did I hate it?
There is a thread in the story where to the characters have arguments that came way too close to home. No matter. I couldn't walk away from it.
It is a brutally honest story of the problems that any family could face. Social commentary that supersedes any religious or social group, and simply affects every family in some way or another.
No family, even those from a strict religious background, are immune from these kinds of problems. Seeing them brought to life in pages of this book can help any family dealing with them to understand how decisions today can affect your entire life.
This should be required reading.
This book is the first of a trilogy. I cannot wait for the second one to come out. I'm sure I will love to hate it just as much!

I loved this book. Within minutes I found myself wanting to learn more...more about the Mormon culture, more about Lizzie, Michael, and all the rest of the family. I knew a little about Mormonism, a unique American religion, but the insights given within this book come without any heaviness or "preachy" tone. I found it refreshing and wonderful. This book was a look into another culture as seen from the eyes of those within that culture! LOVED IT! What's next Haydee???
As I began reading, I wondered how the author came up with the
storyline. And then I found myself caught up in the narrative
and the constant blow-ups between the two main characters.
Dishes languished in the sink, chores went undone; I couldn't
stop reading ... EM
Teenage pregnancy is such a controversial topic, this book just puts it all out there. The characters have a deep sense of belonging to the story and their image is portrayed as the story unravels around a heart wrenching teenage pregnancy and the families who are effected by the pregnancy. This is not a book about innocence; it is brutally honest!
Haydee Dabritz, author of "When Thou Art Broken" writes
with such insight that I actually could deeply feel all the
thoughts and words of all her characters. Though her story
seems to be a fairly simple plot, it kept me turning the pages
to the end -- which she left open for continuing the story.
I'm awaiting her next book.
I was given this book as a gift and when I first picked it up I did not believe it would be a story I would continue to read. But, by the time I reached the end of the second page or so, I felt compelled to continue reading. I know a little about the LDS religion so I understood, somewhat, that part of the story line. While I've never embraced such a structured religion, the author's ability to combine the structure with the LDS belief and dedication in love, forgiveness and responsibility was amazing and you wanted to be that person in the story. The writing style was great - I loved the story, I loved the detail the author provided and the way it was unfolded and presented. She had a way of keeping my attention and wanting me to know how she was going to wrap it up - then I was sorry when she did wrap it up and the book was finished! I love to read and read many styles of writing. This is one of my favorites, I would highly recommend it.
Just ordered another copy because my first is making the rounds with friends. Can't wait for another book by the author.
